Introduced in 1938, the Manors were go-anywhere replacement for the 43xx Mogul and other older 4-4-0s and even re-used some components from withdrawn locomotives. With a new boiler design (Standard No.14) they were over 5 tons lighter than a Grange and nearly 13 tons lighter than a Hall with accompanying tender and their maximum 17t 5cwt axleload brought them nicely under the GWR’s ‘blue’ classification allowing them to be used on important weight restricted routes across the network.

Utilising the latest in full-colour 3D scanning and printing technology, these figures are designed and produced in the UK specifically for the Accurascale Manor. Printed in full colour. Fortunately, No. 7819 was one of eight members of the class to survive its trip to the scrapyard, being saved from Woodham Brothers, Barry Island, in January 1973. Returned to action in 1977 at the Severn Valley Railway it was back on the main line in 1985 as part of the Great Western 150 celebrations and heavily featured in British Rail’s ‘Cardigan Bay Express’ services on its old stamping ground in 1987. Even though it was delivered almost two years after the Great Western Railway was nationalised, for the start of its preservation career No. 7827 was restored to the iconic fully-lined pre-1934 livery with GREAT WESTERN on the tender, despite the class never carrying this scheme, the pre-WWII first batch being outshopped in green with no lining and the ‘shirtbutton’ monogram. This no doubt delighted the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers who enjoyed haulage behind the locomotive for four decades until it was repainted into its as-delivered lined black in 2011. It was taken out of service in 2020 for a lengthy overhaul at Churston that saw it return as the pride of the DSR fleet in lined British Railways green in 2024

7822 Foxcote Manor BR Lined Green (late crest)
The most requested number/livery combination for our second run, No. 7822 Foxcote Manor was the second of the British Railways 78XX locomotives to be constructed, being new to Oswestry in December 1950. It received lined green exactly seven years later after a short period in plain black while allocated to Chester, but spent most of the rest of its days on the Cambrian based at Oswestry, Machynlleth and Shrewsbury. Another of the famed Royal Train quintet that was bulled up under the supervision of Oswestry shed foreman – the last holder of that title – A.E. Swannick in August 1963, it could also be found regularly leading the Cambrian Coast Express to and from Aberystwyth among other passenger, milk/parcels and freight duties. It was taken out of service in November 1965 in the great cull of the class that saw ten examples withdrawn and just two left operational. Happily, despite having spent the best part of a decade at Dai Woodham’s Barry scrapyard, it was preserved by the Foxcote Manor Society in January 1975 and after a decade at Oswestry it found its way to the Llangollen Railway where the rest of its restoration took place. It worked trains for the first time in 23 years in April 1988. The penultimate delivery of the post-nationalisation batch was new to Neath at the end of December 1950 but had moved to Shrewsbury before the end of 1952. It lost its attractive lined black delivery scheme for plain black the following December after a Heavy Intermediate overhaul at Stafford Road, Wolverhampton, but this was mitigated when it became the first Manor to received lined green – not too far from the classic GWR livery of the early 20th century – at Swindon in July 1956. Later allocated to Croes Newydd and Aberystwyth, in January 1965 it returned to Shrewsbury for its final ten months of service, being withdrawn that October. After languishing at Woodham’s scrapyard for 15 years, it moved to the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway in June 1981 and returned to steam in December 1987. It moved to the West Somerset in 1995 and wore the name Norton Manor between 2011-18 after the home of 40 Commando, based at nearby Norton Fitzwarren. This was an appropriate nickname for a Great Western-designed machine wearing a livery inspired by the locomotives of the London & North Western Railway, but the image suited the elegantly proportioned 78XX locomotives well and in some quarters it is held in higher esteem than the lined green that was later applied to the class. Completed by Swindon in December 1950 its first shed was Croes Newydd, Wrexham, and it was the last of the type to remain in lined black, being repainted in April 1956 after a heavy general overhaul while allocated to Carmarthen. After two years at Neyland in southwest Wales from 1961-3 it spent its last five months in traffic based at Reading, being retired in May 1964 after just 13 and a half years and around 450,000 miles of service. Dispatched to Birds at Risca, near Newport, for disposal there would be no Barry-style resurrection for No. 7825 and it was scrapped just three months later in August 1964.

7819 Hinton Manor BR Lined Green (late crest)
The last Manor to be outshopped from Swindon in lined green in February 1960 after a decade in plain black, No. 7819 Hinton Manor spent its entire career in Wales, later becoming a stalwart of the former Cambrian Lines during the British Railways period.
