Class 73

The Accurascale Class 73/9 celebrates the reinvention of one of Britain’s classic locomotive families. Originally built in the 1960s as electro-diesels for the Southern Region, the Class 73 fleet combined 600hp diesel engines with third-rail capability. From 2015, eleven locomotives were rebuilt by Wabtec at the former Brush works in Loughborough, forming the modern Class 73/9 fleet. These machines gained powerful 1600hp MTU 8V4000R43L engines, new AC alternators, upgraded cooling systems and significant structural refinements, effectively creating a “half-HST” within the classic 73 bodyshell. Comprehensive overhauls saw renewed bogies, refurbished traction motors, simplified air-only braking and the introduction of modern features such as LED lighting and CAPOS capacitor-based starting.Two distinct groups emerged and are offered in model form for the first time: Phase 1, finished in GBRf livery for southern operations, and Phase 2, adapted for Caledonian Sleeper duties in Scotland with further front-end, fuel and cab modifications.

73962 – GBRf, Early

This loco started life as E6032 and entered service in May 1966. Converted in 2016, this locomotive became the only “namer” of the Caledonian sleeper 73s on the 24th of May 2024 when in a ceremony at the Bo’ness and Kinneil railway it was given the name W. S. Sellar in memory of founding member of the SRPS. The name had previously been carried by 37175 before its sale from preservation to Colas Rail. Our model depicts 73970 in its current condition as running today with the drop Dellner, 3rd rail equipment removed, the bodyside windows replaced by grilles and nameplates.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3957/0801/files/73970CSLate_13ab42de-1668-43b2-bd43-bbe811365bcf.png?v=1764579692
class-73-9-loksound-dcc-sound-decoder
Class 73/9 Loksound Sound Decoder

LokSound V5 DCC Sound Chip

Designed specifically for the accurascale Class 73/9 locomotive, this decoder works seamlessly with the onboard lighting, PowerPack stay-alive system and dual speaker configuration to reproduce the characteristic sound and function of a Class 73/9 Locomotive at work.

Sound

The LokSound 5 decoder can reproduce up to 10 channels simultaneously. Each channel offers up to 16 Bit / 31250 kHz and thus we have finally achieved hi-fi sound quality on your layout. For all practical purposes one cannot detect any difference to the original. A class D audio power amplifier with up to 3W output power feeds the speakers with a permitted impedance of 4 – 32 Ohms. The huge 128 MBit sound memory assures sufficient storage capacity.

The volume of all individual sound fragments may be adjusted separately. The outstandingly flexible sound engine without a rigid flow chart facilitates a prototypical simulation of all conceivable rail vehicles. Three separately adjustable braking functions and two alternative load scenarios provide you with maximum control of your vehicles.

Functions

We are quite aware that you want your locomotives to be as realistic as possible. Therefore we have packed many function outputs into it. Subject to the type of interface every LokSound 5 has at least 10 amplified outputs. The decoders with PluX22 or 21MTC interface have an additional 4 outputs for controlling servos or as logic outputs. Of course, all important lighting functions are supported. The brightness of each output may be adjusted separately. The decoder supports the automatic push and pull movements – known as the coupler waltz - required for reliable operation of digital couplers such as the ones by ROCO® and Krois® as well as Telex® couplers.

Motor control

Motor control of the LokSound 5 has been further improved. A variable PWM pulse frequency ranging from 10 kHz to 50 kHz assures perfect silent operation, particularly for coreless motors. Thus the typical hum is a thing of the past. Load control can now be adjusted with up to 10 separate CVs and thus will manage even the most difficult cases. The unique “Auto Tune” function facilitates the automatic calibration of the decoder to perfectly match the motor. The LokSound 5 decoder supplies up to 1.5A motor current, which is quite sufficient even for older motor types.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3957/0801/files/bba9d9742d_90cb7c57-d84d-49e9-a05e-3057ff7c59b9.jpg?v=1743519230
class-73-9-crew-driver-driver
Class 73/9 Crew- Driver/Driver-GBRF

Utilising the latest in full-colour 3D scanning and printing technology, these figures are designed and produced in the UK specifically for the Accurascale class 73/9.
